How to Apply for a Study Permit: Step by Step

A study permit application is judged on three things: a genuine acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), proof you can financially support yourself, and confidence that you'll respect the terms of your stay.

Step 1: Choose a Designated Learning Institution

Only DLIs can host study permit holders. Program length, location, and post-graduation work permit eligibility should all factor into your choice.

Step 2: Secure your acceptance letter

You'll need an official letter of acceptance before applying — some provinces (Quebec) also require a separate provincial acceptance certificate (CAQ).

Step 3: Prove financial support

You must show funds for tuition plus living expenses for yourself (and any accompanying family) for at least the first year of study.

Step 4: Write a strong statement of purpose

Officers want to see a clear, honest connection between your background, your chosen program, and your plans afterward.

Step 5: Submit biometrics and apply

Processing times vary by country of residence — apply as early as possible before your program start date.
